Abstract
The notion of »system« is the basis of this whole study. Since in the theory of design no standardised definition can be found, the research question that arises is: What is a design system? In order to define this notion and to outline a current status quo for this research area, different perspectives are analysed: Karl Gerstner’s creative principle understands the notion of "programme" as a systematic approach to a task, in which programmes for solutions are created instead of solutions to tasks. Siegfried Maser defines system as a structured entity wher the individual elements are assembled according to certain rules to form an entity. The notion of »system design« is utilised by Hans Gugelot in his variable furniture systems. In Fritz Haller’s modular construction principles all objects are compatible and can be rebuilt and adapted according to new requirements. Walter Bohatsch’s approach to a system is based on the method which he defines as a procedure built upon a regular system which enables him to achieve practical results. Vilém Flusser considers a systematic repertoire as a code. The sum of all possible combinations depends on the interplay between the elements according to rules.

In this study »system« is defined as a methodical procedure. When creating a system the problem that occurs is examined, reduced and its key factors are identified. This happens after a precise examination of its contents and its component parts. When constructing a system its elements, which are connected according to certain rules, are defined. These rules construct a system which is perceived as an entity. The objective of a system is always to give the content of something a corresponding visual result. As it is a system, multiple solutions are possible whereas one is always optimal.

Due to this practicable definition a set of rules arises out of which solutions for corporate design can be generated.
